What Do You Want To Be When You Grow Up?

Our country and the rest of the world are going through a lot of changes. Instead of thinking of them as changes, they can be call opportunities. If you are looking for career opportunities and also have a love of animals, have you ever considered a career in animal care?

Let’s look at a few of the possibilities:

  • Veterinarian – In the USA, veterinarians must complete four years of study in a veterinary school following 3-4 years of undergraduate pre-veterinary work. Then must sit for a national examination as well as examinations in those states in which they wish to become licensed practitioners.
  • Veterinary assistants – Helps veterinarians and vet technicians. You would need to complete a CTE Program and high school diploma/GED. There is no  requirement for certification or licensing.
  • Grooming – In order to become a professional groomer you need to go to a professional grooming school. After that, gain experience by working at a grooming shop or a facility that does grooming.
  • Pet Sitting – Pet sitting is ranked as one of the Ten Best Home Based businesses. As opposed to the first three careers, no schooling is required. This is not to say that if you want to make a paying business of it you should approach it as a business. The stress level and start up costs are low.
  • Boarding or Kennel - Consideration must be given about location for the facility. You’d need to check with local ordinances and the costs required to run it.
  • Shelters and Rescues – These often use volunteer help but they also need to have administrative work done.
  • Dog Walking – Today so many people work outside the home and are away for long hours. They want to make sure that their dogs get the exercise that they need. Dog owners want to be sure that the person walking their precious pets are trust worthy and reliable.
  • Zoos – These jobs are often on a civil servant level, you get to work on all levels with exotic animals.
  • Pet Stores – Not only do pet stores sell merchandise but they also sell dogs, cats, birds, fish and other small animals. Pet stores are found in almost every community.

These are just a few of the pet careers possible. Veterinarians like people doctors specialize, so that career can go in several directions. Some groomers are mobile or I have seen a Do-it-Yourself dog washes. Pet sitting can be in the owners home or at the sitters. Kennels come in all sizes and varieties. Dog Walking can be run as a business having several people employed to walk the dogs.

The possibilities are limitless and run the full range of how much money can be made from the Vet to the Dog Walker. If this is something that has been in your heart to pursue, now could be the time.

A week ago I read in the newspaper that Dog Whisperer Cesar Milan was sworn in as a U.S. citizen in Montebello California. I am a big fan of Cesar’s; he has given me a much better understanding of dogs and so I say, “Congratulations Cesar!”
