Are You A Pet’s Mother?
This Sunday, May 11 is Mothers Day in our country. It is cerebrated all around the world, not necessarily on this particular date in other countries, but it is a worldwide event nevertheless. Mother’s Day as we know the holiday today was created in the United States by Anna Jarvis of West Chester Pennsylvania in 1907. Two years after her mother died she held a commemoration and went on to campaign to have an official holiday to honor Mothers. In 1914 it became a recognized national holiday. Anna was not happy about how something that started out so pure and loving turned out to be a commercial big money maker.
Today we know that mothering comes in many forms and shapes, and I wouldn’t dare take on that subject here! However, I’d like to salute the folks with four legged-whiskered children. I know, I know, some of my biggest animal-care heroes say that pets are not children, they are animals! Yes and no on that one. I loosely define children as the lives that we are responsible to care for and nurture; is that not what we do for our pets? Animals? Of course, we need to always bare in mind their true nature and always respect that in our caring for them.
In spite of all that is going on, people care about the welfare of pets as never before. President Obama’s getting a new puppy was big news. Awareness of puppy mills and their cruelty has the nation stirred up. Hopefully the day will come, and not too soon that they will cease to exist. Municipalities are enforcing spaying and neutering to prevent senseless euthanasia.
We love our cats and dogs; they depend on us for food, shelter and love. Is it any wonder we use the word “adopt” when we get a dog or cat? Your dog or cat may not be able to buy you a card or take you out to dinner but they say “Happy Mother’s Day” every day with the love and joy they give you and that’s from the heart, Anna would approve!
If you’re getting a new puppy this holiday we carry Puppy Training Pads, Training Books, and all kinds of Kitten nutritional products.
P.S. Happy Mother’s Day
