Happy Saint Patrick’s to all our Irish and non-Irish readers! This day is celebrated all over the world with with parades, the New York parade is the biggest in the world. People gather for parties and all sorts of festivities. We all really need to stop and celebrate life and what better way than with the wearing of the green as they say?

Many beautiful dogs breeds have come from Ireland. One of the most amazing of the Irish dogs that comes to mind is the Irish Wolfhound. The very impressive Irish Wolfhound is the tallest breed of dog in the world. I saw my first Irish Wolfhound in the park a number of years ago. It was an amazing sight; all the dogs came running to it as if it was a god! The second time was at a friend’s son’s house. Into the room came what looked like a pony and yet he was a dog! I heard “Up, up Arthur!” My friend’s son who is six feet tall was looking Arthur right in the eye!

Irish Wolfhounds as a breed has been around a long time perhaps 8000BC or 3500BC and were breed as war dogs guard dogs because of their size. Here is the irony; Wolfhounds are really gentle giants! They are patient, good tempered and and loyal. They can be trusted around children because they are so gentle. The sad part is that they have a short life span, somewhere between five and nine years due to particulars of their breed.

There is also the beautiful red-coated Irish Setter who is also a great dog for the family. They are an intelligent and fun loving dog breed. Here’s an interesting story in this year of presidential dog interest. It is the story of the Irish Setter belonging to President Nixon named King Timahoe. It seems that he chewed a hole in the Oval office carpet during the Watergate fiasco! Coincidence?

Other Irish dogs are:

  • Irish Terrier
  • Irish Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier
  • Irish Water Spaniel
  • Irish Red and White Setter

We thank Ireland for many things; wonderful people, food, music, poetry and…beautiful dogs!

We have a wide variety of Dog Breed books in our store that have invaluable information about the care of your dog, mutt or pure breed.

I, as well, have a very pit-bull who could be the most tender animal I’ve ever owned. Quickly, a brand new dog breed will occur along for your media to blast, because they have completed rotties and dobies in previous many years. Unfortunate that media sensationalism breeds much inaccurate information.
